Local Retail Centres Week 32, 2024: London Sees Footfall and Dwell Time Rise

Retail footfall and dwell time trends across the UK have shown varied patterns in the latest week, according to data from Huq Industries. The data, which covers over 2,700 retail centres, highlights significant regional differences in consumer behaviour and retail health.

Local Retail Centres Daily Footfall

In Yorkshire and the Humber, the average daily footfall slightly increased by 0.3% week on week, while the average visit dwell time remained stable. This region saw a slight decrease in footfall compared to the same period last year, but the dwell time has increased, suggesting that while fewer people may be visiting, those who do are staying longer.

The North East experienced a decrease in footfall by 3.2% week on week, with a notable drop in dwell time by 7.6%. This continues a recent trend impacted by negative events.

In contrast, the South East saw an increase in both footfall and dwell time, with footfall up by 0.4% week on week and dwell time increasing by 5.5%. This could be indicative of local weather conditions and seasonal holidays.

London, as a major retail hub, showed a modest increase in footfall by 0.6% week on week and a significant increase in dwell time by 4.3%. Again, this reflects recent trends and the influence of tourism in this region.

Huq data also highlights the top performers and those that have not fared as well. For instance, Rochdale Road in Royton, North West, saw a significant increase in footfall, making it one of the top performers. Conversely, Derby Road in Stapleford, East Midlands, experienced one of the largest declines in footfall.

This detailed regional analysis provides valuable insights for retailers and commercial real-estate companies looking to understand and adapt to the evolving market conditions across different parts of the UK.
